Paul Hartley (born 12 July 1970) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a midfielder. He was most recently the manager of Dundee United but left the club by mutual consent on 20 October 2017, and was appointed manager of League Two club Hartlepool United on 18 November 2017, with Craig Hignett moving to the role of assistant manager and former player Richie Baker becoming first-team coach. Early life
Paul Hartley was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 5 October 1976. He began his career with Hearts, making his professional debut in 1995. He won the Scottish Cup with Hearts in 1998 and moved to Celtic in 2000. With Celtic, he won the Scottish Premier League (SPL) three times, the Scottish Cup twice and the Scottish League Cup once. He also reached the UEFA Cup Final with Celtic in 2003. Hartley spent two seasons at Blackpool from 2005 to 2007 before moving back to Scotland with Hibernian. He returned to Hearts in 2008, playing for the club until retiring as a player in 2011. He became their manager in 2015 but resigned after a poor start to the season that year. Playing career
Paul Hartley started his playing career with Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, where he made over 200 appearances and won the Scottish Cup in 1998. He then moved to English side Bristol City for a season, before returning to Scotland to join Celtic. With Celtic, Hartley won the Scottish Premier League, Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup, as well as reaching the UEFA Cup Final in 2003. He also earned 25 caps for the Scottish national team between 2002 and 2007. At club level, Hartley’s achievements include winning the Scottish league championship five times (once with Hearts and four times with Celtic), three Scottish Cups (once with Hearts and twice with Celtic) and two League Cups (once with Hearts and once with Celtic). His achievements are recorded in both clubs’ official archives. As manager of St Johnstone, Hartley led them to their first major trophy by defeating Dundee United 2-0 in the 2014 Scottish Cup Final. The following year he led St Johnstone to another cup final but lost 3-0 against Aberdeen on 27 May 2015 at Hampden Park.
Managing career
Hartley’s first managerial role was with Alloa Athletic, whom he guided to promotion from Scottish League One in his first season in charge. He then had a spell as manager of Dunfermline Athletic, before being appointed as head coach of Hearts in 2014. After a successful spell at Hearts, Hartley was appointed manager of Celtic in 2016. He won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup with Celtic in his first season in charge, before being sacked in February 2018.
