Bush was born at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in Hammersmith, London, England, on 30 July 1958. She is the second child of librarian Alan Frederick Bush (1929–2011) and his wife Lavinia Mary (née Wall; 1934–2014). She was raised in Richmond upon Thames with her older brother, John. The family lived in Godolphin Road. Her father worked as a foreign exchange dealer at Lloyd’s of London.
