In 2001, she became one of few tennis players to win singles titles on all four surfaces (hard, clay, grass and carpet). When she won her second French Open title that year, she was ranked No. 1 for a total of 21 weeks and was considered one of finest female athletes in history. She retired at 26 years old but then returned to play professionally on occasion before retiring for good in 2009.
