Čilić was born in Osijek to father Damir, a car dealer, and mother Vesna. He has an older brother named Marko who is also a tennis player on Croatian Davis Cup team. Čilić speaks fluent Croatian and English. In June 2017 he married longtime girlfriend Jelena Ristić [1] with whom he has a daughter Petra (born 15 October 2013). [2]

The most memorable moment in his career was without a doubt winning his first ever Grand Slam tournament at the 2014 US Open. He went on to beat big names like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer en route to winning his maiden Slam. Čilić’s first breakthrough came in early 2008 at a tournament in Buenos Aires where he qualified to meet world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in his first main draw match. Having never defeated a top-10 player before and being ranked only 143rd himself, Čilić took Nadal to five sets but ended up losing in three hours and forty minutes.
