Čilić was born in Osijek to father Damir, a car dealer, and mother Vesna. He has an older brother named Marko who is also a tennis player on Croatian Davis Cup team. Čilić speaks fluent Croatian and English. In June 2017 he married longtime girlfriend Jelena Ristić  with whom he has a daughter Petra (born 15 October 2013). 
He was married to Petra Martić with whom he has two children. In June 2018, Čilić confirmed his relationship with Nicole Šušnjar after they met at Wimbledon 2017. They got engaged in January 2019.

Born in Split to a Serbian father, Čilić moved with his family to Osijek when he was a baby. He grew up playing football until age 10 before falling in love with tennis.

Čilić started playing tennis at age 6. His father (also named Marin) began taking him to Krunoslav Galić’s academy. Galić was a former Davis Cup player for Yugoslavia who reached his career-high singles ranking of World No. 40 in 1985.

The most memorable moment in his career was without a doubt winning his first ever Grand Slam tournament at the 2014 US Open. He went on to beat big names like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer en route to winning his maiden Slam. On top of that, it put him in a category of players who have won four titles on clay courts, three on hardcourts, and one on grass courts—the so-called clay court slam club.

Čilić’s first breakthrough came in early 2008 at a tournament in Buenos Aires where he qualified to meet world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in his first main draw match. Having never defeated a top-10 player before and being ranked only 143rd himself, Čilić took Nadal to five sets but ended up losing in three hours and forty minutes.
