It may not be immediately obvious from his lilt, but McDaid hails from Scotland. He has dual citizenship, and even performed at a Tartan Day ceremony in New York City’s Madison Square Garden with Snow Patrol.
2) His mum and dad ran their own business
His dad was a taxi driver and his mum owned a shop. McDaid says: My parents worked like dogs for their kids – we never wanted for anything, that’s for sure, he said. I have no doubt it instilled in me a sense of respect and appreciation of hard work. These are values I carry with me to this day.
3) Guitar lessons started at age 8
As a child, he played guitar and piano. In his early teens, his uncle gave him a recording studio as a gift. He started to compose music then. As a teenager he worked as a songwriter for Warner/Chappell Music Publishing where he met Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol. Soon after that, McDaid joined Snow Patrol and has played with them ever since.

4) Band practice was in his bedroom
Before joining Vega4 and Snow Patrol, McDaid was in a band called 1060. And instead of paying to practice with his band mates in a studio, he just had them come over to his house. Eventually, they decided that it would be easier if they all just bought their own instruments and started practicing in places other than John’s bedroom.
5) He broke out with his song White Lies
While he’s been writing for other artists, it wasn’t until 2013 that John broke out as a singer with his solo album, The Great War. Many of his fans don’t realize that one of his first hits was actually not one of his own songs. White Lies is a collaboration between bands Snow Patrol and The Enemy. It was released in 2005, when John was lead guitarist for Snow Patrol.
