Early life

Gvasalia was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. When he was young his father left the family. He studied at a Swiss boarding school before attending Central Saint Martins in London. In 2007 he co-founded of streetwear brand VETEMENTS with childhood friend Guram Mamulia.

Work with Thom Browne

Demna studied fashion design in London before moving to Paris, where he interned with Louis Vuitton. He then went on to intern at Maison Martin Margiela before joining forces with his childhood friend Guram Gvasalia (no relation) at Vetements. After the huge success of their first show in 2014, they parted ways- Demna taking over as creative director of Balenciaga and Guram starting up his own line under the same name.

2012 F/W MAN show with Kris Van Assche

The Fall 2012 MAN show was one of the most highly anticipated men’s shows in recent history. The anticipation for this show was largely due to the fact that it was debuting a new designer-Demna Gvasalia. This would be his first show since he became creative director at Balenciaga.

The collection focused on geometric shapes, monotone color palettes and exaggerated proportions.
