Woody Allen’s movies are so prevalent in American culture that it’s easy to take them for granted. Whether it’s the neurotic New York Jew portrayed in such classics as Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Sisters or his more recent work, including Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen has created some of the most iconic characters in film history. But did you know that Allen wasn’t always successful? In fact, he was told no by every studio until he made his first hit movie, Bananas, in 1971. Heywood Woody Allen: A Life in Film

Early life

Woody Allen was born Allan Stewart Konigsberg to Nettie (née Maifrette), a bookkeeper, and Martin Konigsberg, who worked at a jewelry store. His family is Jewish; he was raised in a Conservative household near Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood. As a young boy, he would lie on the floor watching television and write down all the jokes he heard while his parents were arguing. Heywood Woody Allen: A Life in Film

Standup comedy (1950s–1960s)

As a young stand-up comedian, Woody would relentlessly get on stage and make jokes about anything he found to be funny. When the crowds started to dwindle because the bombing jokes were not well received, he switched his style of humor to observational comedy.

Early filmmaking (1960s–1970s)

Allen started writing comic, one-act plays which he performed at West Side YMCA as a teenager. He also began to teach himself how to play the clarinet and saxophone and would often have classical composers like Mozart or Beethoven playing while he was practicing.

Stardom (1970s–1980s)

His first major film success came with Annie Hall (1977) which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. As a director, he often employs the people who worked on his earlier films, such as cinematographer Gordon Willis, editor Susan E. Morse and actress Diane Keaton. In many of his films he also plays out his conflicts with women by castigating them instead of taking responsibility himself.

Personal life (1980s–1990s)

Woody struggled with his public image, leading to years of self-imposed isolation. In 1979, a man filed a lawsuit against him for molesting his daughter during visitation rights, which drove him into seclusion; this is often misattributed to the allegation that he sexually abused his stepdaughter Dylan Farrow in 1992.
