When Spencer was a little boy, he loved playing with toy trucks and other construction equipment. He would create imaginary cities for them to drive through or tell his brother about their adventures. It was not until middle school that he actually started playing football. Spencer Spence Petras has been an athlete his entire life. With such a family legacy of sports and athleticism, he knew what path he wanted to take.

He is a native of Indiana and attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis where he played football, soccer, and track. In high school he was able to average 7 yards per carry on 23 rushing touchdowns as well as finish his senior year with an 8-2 record.


Spencer was born and raised in Orange, California. He is one of three kids, with an older sister and a younger brother. His parents are college professors at UCLA, so they moved around often when he was growing up, but they always ended up back in Southern California.


Despite being only a sophomore, Spencer has captured many hearts in the college football world. Recently, we sat down with him to find out more about his life and career. My parents have always been there for me and I’ve grown up loving them more than anything in this world, said Petras when asked about his relationship with his family. They give me all of their support.

Spencer was born in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated from Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Ladue, Missouri. He committed to the University of Iowa for college football and began his career at Iowa in 2017 as a graduate transfer after spending two years playing for San Diego State.

In 2019, he won the starting job at quarterback for Iowa and has had an outstanding season so far (he is completing 73% of his passes).


Spencer was ranked as one of the top-10 quarterbacks in his class. He played for Malibu High School, and before he even started his senior year he committed to Iowa University. He’s a guy that when you see him on film it looks like something special, so we’re really excited about him, said Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz . Ferentz also commented on how energetic and mobile Spencer is, and how these qualities will make him an effective college quarterback.

About His Education

Spencer started playing football when he was in 6th grade and quickly took to it. He wanted to continue playing football at a high level, so he attended Chaminade Prep, where he helped his team win two CIF championships and win one MaxPreps National championship. Once he graduated, he enrolled at the University of Iowa to play quarterback for their Hawkeyes football team.

His Love for Football

Since he was 5 years old, Spencer had an inclination towards football. It began when his father signed him up for youth football and he’s loved it ever since. By age 12, he knew that football was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life and four years later, his dream came true when he received a scholarship to play for Iowa. Now in college, this versatile quarterback is taking over the country.

In 2005, at the age of 10, he threw for 3,500 yards and 50 touchdowns in 8-10 games played. In 2006, he led his team to a 5A State Championship. In 2007, he was voted Dallas Morning News SportsDay Player of the Year. In 2008, he led Mesquite High School to its second consecutive state championship with a perfect 15-0 record while throwing over 2,000 yards and 34 touchdowns.

Iowa Hawkeyes football player Spencer Petras is an incredible leader and skilled athlete. His journey to success started from humble beginnings in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After high school, he went on to study economics at Saint Vincent College for two years before transferring to the University of Iowa for his final two years of college. In those last two years he completed an internship with Bank of America Merrill Lynch and went on a humanitarian mission to Peru before graduating with a degree in economics.
