He is a native of Indiana and attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis where he played football, soccer, and track. In high school he was able to average 7 yards per carry on 23 rushing touchdowns as well as finish his senior year with an 8-2 record.

Spencer was born in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated from Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Ladue, Missouri. He committed to the University of Iowa for college football and began his career at Iowa in 2017 as a graduate transfer after spending two years playing for San Diego State.

In 2019, he won the starting job at quarterback for Iowa and has had an outstanding season so far (he is completing 73% of his passes).

Spencer was ranked as one of the top-10 quarterbacks in his class. He played for Malibu High School, and before he even started his senior year he committed to Iowa University. Spencer started playing football when he was in 6th grade and quickly took to it. He wanted to continue playing football at a high level, so he attended Chaminade Prep, where he helped his team win two CIF championships and win one MaxPreps National championship. Once he graduated, he enrolled at the University of Iowa to play quarterback for their Hawkeyes football team.
