Julia Jacklin’s debut album released in 2015 became an instant sensation among critics, who praised its ability to create something new from sounds that had come before. A record that is never afraid to experiment, yet deeply self-aware; this indie release can’t be classified as anything less than one of the most daring debut records in recent memory. Produced by Burke Reid (of POND) and mixed by Flaming Lips’ Dave Fridmann, Don’t Let The Kids Win not only encompasses influences such as Taylor Swift, John Lennon, and Cat Stevens (via Joni Mitchell), but manages to wholly redefine them. After touring Australia with her family band The Family Jams, Julia returned home to Sydney where she recorded Crushing.

How did you get into music?

I started playing guitar and writing songs when I was 17. I had some friends who were in bands and they showed me how to play a few chords. After that, I just started writing my own songs and trying to figure out how to play them on guitar.

What’s your songwriting process like?

It usually starts with a phrase or a feeling that I can’t shake.
