Born as Kimberly Ann Smith in California, she married Terry Pegula, a former executive with East Resources, in 1996 and moved with him to Western New York when he was hired by his current employer PennTex Energy Corp.. Kim earned a BA in French literature while pursuing a degree in Law and Society at Cornell.

After graduating from Penn State with a degree in design, Kim began working as a sales manager for Donna Karan New York and Ralph Lauren in New York City.
