Duckworth was born in Bangkok, Thailand on March 12, 1968 to a father of Thai Chinese descent and a mother with English and Scottish ancestry. Her father worked as an airline manager for Thai Airways International (THAI) while her mother served as THAI’s director of crew administration.[5] Following her parents’ divorce when she was 18 months old, she moved with her mother and brother Eddie to Indonesia.

Early Life


Duckworth was born in Bangkok, Thailand, where her father was serving in both military and diplomatic roles. She lived in many places during her childhood, as her family followed her father’s assignments in Southeast Asia and later Washington state. Her family ultimately settled in Hawaii when she was a teenager. ~~~ In high school, Duckworth participated in numerous student leadership organizations, including as President of both Junior Class and Student Council.

Military Service


A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Duckworth is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. She was commissioned an officer in 1994 and went on to become a Black Hawk helicopter pilot after participating in ROTC during her time as an undergraduate. In 2003, she lost both her legs when her helicopter was shot down by enemy fire during combat operations in Iraq. For her service there, she was awarded several medals including two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained from that incident.

Political Career


Duckworth became an advocate for veterans rights after being disabled in 2004 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was a Democratic candidate for Congress in 2006 and ran again in 2008, losing both times. In 2012, she ran a successful campaign to become a congresswoman representing Illinois’ 8th district; she served until 2017, when she resigned after winning election to the Senate.
