Ryan was born in Swansea, Wales. He grew up in Clydach Vale, which he has described as a rough area. He attended Wind Street Primary School, Glan Afan Comprehensive School and Brynteg Comprehensive School (Ysgol Gyfun Bryntaf), where he began acting in school plays. 2006–2011: Ryan’s early career began with small roles in films, playing parts in big-budget films such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), The Bourne Identity (2002) and Pearl Harbor (2001). He also appeared in Spooks, a BBC production which he landed aged 17. Ryan was later chosen to portray Alex West in EastEnders, a role he played from 2003 until 2004.
Ryan has been in a relationship with actress Pearl Mackie since 2014.
