Q. & A.
How did you prepare for your role in Barry? What does that preparation entail, and how long does it usually take? I spent a ton of time working on my character, from watching all 10 episodes prior to getting started on Season 1, to speaking with Henry Winkler [who plays Barry’s acting coach] a bunch. First I’d go through his lines and see if there was anything that stood out—if he said something similar in another episode.
What’s up with Bill Hader’s eye?
It’s a special effect he does for his characters. He was born with an iris pigmentation disorder, similar to heterochromia iridum, which causes his right eye to be different in color from his left eye. Hader has stated that he had always been self-conscious about it and wanted to use it as a tool when acting.
Is Bill Hader a smoker?
Yes. He says he’s never quit, but he hasn’t smoked in four years, either. He used to light up between filming scenes on Barry.

Is Bill Hader Native American?
This is another one where I had to look up if Bill Hader was actually Native American. Turns out he’s not, but that didn’t stop him from starring in a movie about a high school basketball coach who pretends to be Native American. It doesn’t sound like he’s playing an Indian role, though. The film is called The Miracle Season, and it takes place after a female high school coach dies suddenly in practice one day.
What personality type is Bill Hader?
I’m an introvert, he says. I would say I’m an INTJ. I think that probably helps with [the role] because you can be kind of cold and misanthropic as it is, but if you’re also quietly judging everyone around you while you do it, that helps too. There are a lot of social scenes where we had to go out and do stuff, and those were torture for me.
