In 2005, Hamilton became one of only two drivers to win at least one race in their first season at both Renault and McLaren. He finished fifth in his debut season for McLaren. He won his first Grand Prix in Canada after finishing second behind Kimi Räikkönen since his teammate, Juan Pablo Montoya had been injured by a faulty fuel pressure regulator. As well as Barrichello he was close friends with Jenson Button from their karting days.
