Todd Lynn Helton is an American former professional baseball first baseman who played his entire 17-year career for the Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played college baseball for the Tennessee Volunteers at the University of Tennessee, and was selected by the Rockies in the 19th round of the 1995 MLB draft. Born in Weir, Mississippi, Helton was raised in Millersburg, Ohio. After a stellar career at Bowling Green State University, he was drafted by Colorado in 1995. He won five Gold Glove Awards and three Silver Slugger Awards as a Rockies first baseman before retiring after the 2013 season.

Early years

He was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana. His father, Steve, was a pitcher at Indiana University for two years in college before he was drafted by and subsequently signed with both San Diego Padres as an amateur free agent in 1974. A year later, his family moved to Dardanelle, Arkansas when his father began coaching for Dardanelle High School.

High school years

Helton attended Central High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. During his time at Central, he played both football and baseball and was a teammate of Peyton Manning on the football team. While there, he was also a part of three state championship teams in softball.
