Born in Castro Valley, California, he graduated from Hayward High School. He attended college at Oregon State University and played for coach Dave Kragthorpe’s Oregon State Beavers football team from 1978 to 1981. During his sophomore season in 1979, he was an All-Pacific-10 Conference defensive back. The following year he moved to linebacker, and during his senior season in 1981 led his team with 141 tackles.

DeL Rio played high school football at Fountain Valley High School, in Fountain Valley, California. After graduating from high school he then attended junior college at College of San Mateo (1982–1983) and NCAA Division I at Idaho State University (1984–1986). He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Idaho State in 1987. He played defensive back for all four years and finished his senior year with 191 tackles. NFL Career
A two-time all-state selection, Del Rio graduated from Hayward High School and then played his college football at University of California. As a senior in 1984, he was named first team All-Pac-10 and second team All-America. After college, he went on to play for eight seasons in the NFL with Chicago (1985–87), Denver (1988–90) and San Francisco (1991). He finished his professional career with 30 sacks, three interceptions returned for touchdowns and 14 fumble recoveries.
