The boxer was born on January 25, 1981 in Bataan City to an American father serving in the US army at that time. His mother is a Filipina who grew up in Payatas, Quezon City. The family moved frequently until they settled down permanently in Angeles City after his father retired from service. Junior began boxing at nine years old in his hometown of Talibon in Bohol under Guillermo Salas (who was also responsible for training Lito Adriano to an Olympic gold medal). In 2001 he won silver medals at both cadet and junior levels at featherweight at National Junior Olympics, as well as a bronze medal at flyweight in another national event. In 2002 he made it to semifinals of that year’s World Junior Championships as a bantamweight.
Professional Career (Super Bantamweight)
Donaire rose to prominence by capturing gold medals at international tournaments in 2004, 2005 and 2006 as a bantamweight. He also won a bronze medal at the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Chicago . He made his professional debut on February 14, 2008 against Bien Flores of Guam . In 2010 he defeated Milton Nunez for the WBO Super Bantamweight title.
