Helfer was born in St. Thomas, Ontario. She is of German descent on her father’s side, and has an Irish background on her mother’s side. Her sister is actress Karissa Lee Staples (born 1980). In 1996 she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she began modeling for various companies. She appeared in a commercial for Applebee’s restaurants.
