John was shunted between several foster homes during his childhood after both his mother and father suffered breakdowns. His maternal grandmother paid for him to have piano lessons for six months.
The Sex Pistols
One of punk’s most legendary acts, Sex Pistols got their start in 1975. The band originally consisted of singer John Lydon (AKA Johnny Rotten), guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock. The group released their first album, Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols in 1977. Their follow-up album, Sheer Terror (1977) was never officially released.

After their initial dissolution, Lydon formed Public Image Ltd (PiL), an experimental band that explored a diverse range of musical styles. The band became one of Britain’s most prominent post-punk acts and was influential in developing a broader alternative rock sound. In 1976, Lydon became a devotee of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s clothing boutique in London called SEX. The two were leaders of a burgeoning cultural movement called Punk, which had become associated with nihilism and anarchy. His manager Bernie Rhodes dubbed him Johnny Rotten because he thought Lydon’s stuttering, dirty appearance reminded him of John Hinckley, Jr., who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan.
