Patrick was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His father, Charles Robert Wilson III, is a businessman, and his mother, Laura Leigh (née Albrecht), is a city parks administrator. He has a brother, Brooks Wilson (born 1982), and a sister, Laura Elizabeth Wilson (born 1988). His family also spent three years living in Village de l’Est in Haiti before moving to Wisconsin in 1980. After graduating from JFK High School (Janesville, Wisconsin) he attended Carnegie Mellon University before transferring to University of Minnesota Duluth where he graduated with bachelor’s degree in drama.
