I didn’t want to be thought of as the woman from ‘House.’

In 2014, I began playing Abby McCarthy in Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. I spent six years of my life as Dr. Lisa Cuddy on House, a character who was a lawyer and also thought she could have sex with her boss when she wanted to. So it felt refreshing and important that Abby was actually both a divorce lawyer and divorced: a woman who was owning it and defining herself outside of men (most of her clients are male).

She was nominated for seven Emmys for her role on House

nominated five times for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and twice for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She never won an Emmy during her nine seasons on House, but she did win three times at both the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Satellite Awards, including two wins from six nominations. I have to say that even with all those great awards, she says, there’s something about having your own TV show—especially one you’ve been filming over five or six years—that feels like it’s going to be your legacy. I’m very proud of House and I have no regrets about my time there.

Her latest project – a web series called Dirty John – has won her critical acclaim

Lisa Edelstein is a revelation, wrote Variety’s Daniel D’Addario. Cinematic in scope, with performances as rich and wrenching as anything to have aired on TV in some time, Dirty John feels like a companion piece to shows such as Big Little Lies and Feud: Bette and Joan: The acting, like everything else here, feels like essential viewing. Glamour said her performance was deliciously vicious and all too human. You will hate her—but you will love every minute of it. Even better? A second season has already been confirmed.

Her new Bravo show, Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce, feels like confessional therapy

It’s funny, insightful and real. Add in a side of self-deprecating wit and you have some of TV’s finest comedic relief. Aside from being excellently written and full of great characters, there’s one more thing that makes Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce so brilliant: It stars Lisa Edelstein, one of America’s most underrated actresses.

And then there are those breathtaking red nails!

Television has evolved from an entertainment option to a social necessity, but with so many different shows out there, it can be hard to know where to turn. Thankfully, we have some suggestions. Q .& A.

You’ve guest starred in many popular TV shows and movies, as well as written a collection of plays. How did you get your start? (1040 words) In addition to my writing career, I have been an actor for over 25 years and it’s been a wonderful journey. It all started when I was in college at New York University studying drama with professor Richard Hornby who told me that I had talent but would never make it because I was too Jewish. He said if I wanted to act professionally then I should move to Los Angeles because there were more opportunities there than New York City. This was probably one of his worst pieces of advice ever!

Why did Edelstein leave House?

By Season 8, Edelstein was growing increasingly frustrated with her character’s storyline. Cuddy was no longer romantically involved with House (and had not been for some time), and she remained confined to her position as Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro. Although, according to Edelstein, fans would frequently approach her asking What happened? What happened? they were really referring to what had happened to Cuddy and House’s relationship – something she felt wasn’t always well-served by the writers.

What is Lisa Edelstein doing now?

Well, while Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce hasn’t exactly been cancelled yet, it’s not doing so well. The ratings are bad, so there’s a chance that it could be put out to pasture after season three – and if that happens, what then? In an interview last year with Bustle she gave us a clue: I would love to do more theater, she said. And I’d also like to go back into primetime for longer than just one or two seasons. So maybe we will get another series starring Edelstein in 2017? We can but hope. Or at least watch House reruns until 2017…

Was Lisa Edelstein in the ER?

Actress Lisa Edelstein was in an episode of ER back in 1996. This medical drama followed a team of doctors and nurses as they attempted to provide care to critically ill patients within Chicago’s emergency room at County General Hospital.

Why was Cuddy not in the last episode?

Viewers of Fox’s House may have been surprised when they tuned in last Tuesday to watch episode 21 and didn’t see one of their favorite doctors. The reason: Actress Lisa Edelstein, who plays Dr. Lisa Cuddy, had gone into labor with her second child just days before filming for A Girl Walks Into a Bar began. Given that she was scheduled to appear in only three episodes after returning from maternity leave (episode 17 was her first), and that she would need time off during production of these episodes, Edelstein couldn’t work past her due date. Instead, producers wrote Cuddy out of all but one episode during which she appeared briefly as a figment of House’s imagination.

Are Lisa Edelstein and Hugh Laurie friends?

No, they’re not. But they do share something in common: As co-stars on Fox’s House, both have won Emmys for their work as physicians (Edelstein for her portrayal of Dr. Lisa Cuddy; Laurie for his portrayal of Dr. Gregory House). Of course, there’s another similarity: While many actors at some point in their careers look back and think about all that could have been — Edelstein has said she was close to landing a role in Friends before deciding to move from New York to L.A., where House would later be filmed — it wouldn’t be unfair to say that these two were never better than when playing medical professionals.

Why was House Cancelled?

If you’re wondering why Fox cancelled House, there’s no one reason. After 8 seasons and after a few hundred episodes, it was time for Dr. House to go away, not just because ratings were down but because he hit that moment where all great characters hit a wall. For some reason, I think of life as a bucket of water: when you start out you have your whole bucket; maybe around your mid-life you only have half or even less than half; but then at some point before death you add more water back in to top off that bucket. But with people who are truly special to us—our heroes—we never ever fill up that bucket entirely again.

Is Hugh Laurie still friends with Sean Leonard?

Sean Leonard, who played James Wilson, left House in 2009. When asked about his former co-star by The Huffington Post, Laurie said he still considers Leonard a friend but they don’t talk as much anymore. He said it’s hard to keep track of everyone with whom he’s worked over time — so many guest stars and crossovers! — but that he always keeps up with Wilson via Twitter.

Is Lisa Edelstein leaving 9-1-1: Lone Star?

Recently, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lisa teased that her character of Abby McCarthy might be back. I know when she’s coming and I can tell you it’s gonna be a juicy season for Abby, she told EW. It was really interesting to come into Girlfriends’ Guide full time and take over from a couple of characters. The show has evolved so much over these past three seasons and I love where they are going with it in season four. It’s been a great ride so far and we just started shooting last week! Who knows what will happen down the road, but as of right now Abby isn’t planning on leaving 9-1-1 any time soon.

Why did Cuddy and House break up?

When you think about why House and Cuddy broke up, it really comes down to one thing: She wanted him to change. And he refused to change, despite how much she loved him and how important he was to her. So they broke up because she realized they couldn’t make their relationship work unless he was willing to compromise—which was going to be difficult for both of them considering that neither of them likes compromises. In my opinion, House’s love for Cuddy wasn’t as strong as his desire not to compromise himself or his principles. It’s sort of like how I feel about pizza —I know that it’s probably healthier for me if I don’t eat it every day but I just can’t help myself!

Is House filmed in a real hospital?

Yes, it’s filmed in a real hospital. The show was supposed to be filmed in Los Angeles, but Fox executives suggested it be filmed at an existing medical facility. The reason for that was due to a scene in which an actor breaks his leg and had to get immediate medical attention. The set-up time required would have taken more than half of their day so they wanted to make sure everything happened as naturally as possible with minimal delays. From what I can tell, it appears that all three seasons were filmed at North Shore University Hospital located in Manhasset, New York on Long Island.

Does House have a limp in real life?

Not at all. He’s got a limp because it makes him more interesting than all of those really handsome male leads who have impeccable posture and everything else in their lives seems to be coming up roses. And no, I didn’t set out to be an actor; I studied ballet for years as a kid and was pretty serious about it until my teacher told me I should pursue acting instead. That was something of a wake-up call! But there’s also so much good stuff on TV these days that you could make an argument that there are even better things to watch than House.

What did Hugh Laurie do after House?

What’s an actor with a medical degree to do after playing a doctor on TV for eight seasons? When House wrapped in 2012, star Hugh Laurie decided to continue dabbling in both medicine and acting by starring in Fox’s The Orville. A mix of sci-fi and comedy, The Orville has been called the show Seth MacFarlane never made. Laurie plays Captain Ed Mercer, who leads a crew that includes Gordon (Scott Grimes), Isaac (Mark Jackson), Alara (Halston Sage), John LaMarr (J. Lee) and navigator Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald). Mercer also has family issues, as his ex-wife Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki) works alongside him.
