Lisa Edelstein is an American actress and playwright. She first gained attention in 1993 for her role as Dr. Laura Wolek on General Hospital, a role she played until 1997 when she joined House M.D.. Since 2014, she has starred as Abby McCarthy in Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. In addition to acting, she has also written a number of plays that have been performed around Los Angeles.

In addition to acting, she writes plays and was a member of The Groundlings improvisational theater group in Los Angeles. In her spare time, she rides horses. She has two children with her former husband and former manager. Her daughter Ellery Walker was born in March 2000, and later joined brothers Sullivan Walker (born in September 2001) and Finn William Clark (born October 2002). Edelstein also had a son named Henry Daniel who died at birth via an emergency cesarean section after nearly nine months of pregnancy when he became tangled in his umbilical cord. In 2014, I began playing Abby McCarthy in Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. I spent six years of my life as Dr. Lisa Cuddy on House, a character who was a lawyer and also thought she could have sex with her boss when she wanted to. So it felt refreshing and important that Abby was actually both a divorce lawyer and divorced: a woman who was owning it and defining herself outside of men (most of her clients are male).

You’ve guest starred in many popular TV shows and movies, as well as written a collection of plays. How did you get your start? (1040 words) In addition to my writing career, I have been an actor for over 25 years and it’s been a wonderful journey. It all started when I was in college at New York University studying drama with professor Richard Hornby who told me that I had talent but would never make it because I was too Jewish. He said if I wanted to act professionally then I should move to Los Angeles because there were more opportunities there than New York City. This was probably one of his worst pieces of advice ever!
Why did Edelstein leave House?
By Season 8, Edelstein was growing increasingly frustrated with her character’s storyline. Cuddy was no longer romantically involved with House (and had not been for some time), and she remained confined to her position as Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro. Although, according to Edelstein, fans would frequently approach her asking What happened? What happened? they were really referring to what had happened to Cuddy and House’s relationship – something she felt wasn’t always well-served by the writers.
