Irrfan Khan was born into an Ismaili Muslim family on 7 January 1967. His father, Ashok R. K. Khan, is a former member of Indian Foreign Service and author who served as cultural secretary at the Indian High Commission in London and as vice-chairman of Hindi Sansthan (which runs IIT Roorkee) from 2009 to 2012. His mother, Sushila Nair, who died on 9 October 2013 at age 83, was a housewife; she also helped out at her husband’s office where Irrfan’s maternal grandfather worked as manager.
