As a stand up comedian and writer he worked at clubs like The Comedy Cellar, Caroline’s on Broadway and Gotham Comedy Club. He was handpicked by Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live where he was a writer for six years before breaking out as one of its most popular cast members in 2012.

His mother, Mary (née O’Grady), worked as a nurse at Lowell General Hospital and his father, Robert Martin Mulaney, Jr., who died of brain cancer in 1997, was also a hospital employee.
