Catherine Jane Ford, professionally known as Catherine Tate, is an English actress, comedian and writer. Things didn’t start off too well
At age 18, she won an open competition to be one of 25 winners for a place at drama school. However, she was not awarded one of these places and later found out that she had failed to win because her application form contained numerous spelling errors. She said I blame my dyslexia.

With no formal qualifications, Tate initially struggled to get work. I was offered a job at HMV selling CDs and DVDs. I lasted a week before walking out. I’d never seen so many CDs and DVDs in my life. That was when I realised that having no qualifications wasn’t going to hold me back, but it might make me a bit more humble! she says.
Her father – the inspiration behind much of her material
The show’s main character, Donna Clarke (Tate), is based on a composite of several of her relatives and friends. Her father is particularly influential to her comedy – he was a rugby player who suffered a serious head injury during one match that forced him to retire from his sport. His personality changes were attributed to an old rugby injury and he became foul-mouthed and argumentative following his retirement.
