Early life

Roberta Joan Anderson was born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. Although her birth certificate lists her first name as Roberta, she was called Joan from birth. Music career

While attending high school, she became interested in folk music and popular singers like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. Her first public performances were folk songs at a Calgary coffeehouse called The Cellar in 1963, where she had gone with friends to hear some of her favorite singer-songwriters, including Liam Clancy and Fred Neil. Before graduating from high school in 1965, she was already touring Western Canada as a member of The Singing Guinea Pigs. She left for New York City three months later.

Chart positions

Big Yellow Taxi was her first top-ten album on both charts, reaching number eight in 1970. A single from that album, Carey, reached number nine on Billboard’s Easy Listening chart and peaked at number 27 on Canada’s national RPM singles chart. From 1971 to 1973, Mitchell released a series of increasingly successful albums.
