He is a member of a sporting family: his mother competed at Wimbledon and his father played football for Dundee United. Murray was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He and his brother were raised by their mother after their parents divorced when he was only three years old. Early on in his childhood, both of his parents encouraged him to pursue a career as a professional tennis player and he began playing at age three. When he was twelve years old, he won an under-12 national championship title and shortly thereafter decided that tennis would be his future.

Two weeks later he won his first major title at Wimbledon after five unsuccessful attempts by defeating Novak Djokovic.
